Prognosis of the heavy metal contents of soil affected by distribution of sedimentsPubliekssamenvatting
A probabilistic model was developed to investigate the accumulation of cadmium, copper, lead and zinc in the adjacent soil by repeatedly distributing contaminated sediments on different categories of landuse and soiltype. By interpreting the model results one must bear in mind that the model represents a simplification of the complex reality, in which the results are affected by the model definitions which have a regional variation. The model predicts (within a period of 50 years in which sediment is distributed four times) a strong effect on the concentrations of cadmium, copper, lead and zinc in the soil if sediments of the so called pollution-level of class 1 and class 2 are distributed. Only the regular deposition of sediment with the pollution-level of class 0 does not increase the probability of exceeding the target values of soils. The current metal concentrations of sediments from ditches which are not additonaly loaded are found to be below the pollution level of class 0 in most cases (based on data of 552 sites). Therefore the number of cases in which the regular distribution of sediment exceeds the Dutch target value of soils within a period of 50 years is presumably limited.
