Worker exposure to fipronil after entry in treated poultry stablesPubliekssamenvatting
The presence of fipronil in eggs due to illegal use was a cause for public concern in the summer of 2017. A specific concern focused on the possible health effects for workers exposed to residues of fipronil when working in henhouses treated with fipronil. RIVM concluded that performing the regular tasks, such as gathering eggs and other more intensive tasks in free-range henhouses does not lead to high dermal or inhalation exposure levels. Only the performance of intensive work tasks in cage stable henhouses, defined as 4 hour of skin contact with treated materials, may have led to an exceedance of health based reference values. It is unlikely that these intensive tasks were performed frequently. These are the conclusions of an investigation carried out by the RIVM. Concentrations of fipronil have been determined in 12 henhouses. Based on these findings the exposure to fipronil of persons working in and near henhouses was estimated. The RIVM collected wipe-, dust-, and manure samples in henhouses and determined the concentration of fipronil in these samples. Exposure to fipronil is predominantly determined through skin contact with materials in the stable, and to a lesser extent through contact with chicken manure. Inhalation of fipronil via dust does not significantly contribute to the total exposure. This exercise does not take into account the exposure from the consumption of contaminated eggs and contact with the chickens.
