Monitoring of chlorinated hydrocarbons in Dutch mother's milk: Levels in 1998 and time-trendsPubliekssamenvatting
The organochloropesticides HCB, beta-HCH and a metabolite of DDT (p,p'-DDE), 2,3,7,8-chlorosubstituted dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F's), non-ortho PCB's, mono-ortho PCB's and indicator PCB's were monitored in Dutch mother's milk in 1998. Median concentrations of HCB, beta-HCH and p,p'-DDE amounted 29.2 ng/g milkfat, 21.4 ng/g milkfat and 198 ng/g milkfat. The median WHO-TEQ-PCDD/F, WHO-TEQ-nonor and WHO-TEQ-monor amounted 19.1 pg TEQ/g milkfat, 5.9 pg TEQ/g milkfat and 6.6 pg/g milkfat. When combined with the results of previous, i.e. 1988 and 1993, monitoring campaigns the results of the 1998 campaign show a steady decline of the amount of pesticides, PCDD's, PCDF's and PCBs in Dutch mother's milk. This decline is caused by the decline of the intake of these compounds from food. In the Netherlands the decline of the intake of PCDDs, PCDFs and PCBs from food may come to a halt in the coming years. If so, it may be expected that the decline of the amount of PCDDs, PCDFs and PCBs in mother's milk may come to a halt too.
