The expected growth in car use of 70% in the period 1986-2010 indicates that measures are necessary to stop further worsening of environmental conditions. Since 1987 Dutch local authorities with more than 40.000 inhabitants may take part in the "environmental traffic map project" (VMK project) to help deal with local environmental problems caused by traffic. The Dutch National Institute of Public Health and Environmental Protection (RIVM) uses the data from these VMK's to estimate the extent of guideline exceedances as well as to get a survey of air quality in Dutch towns and cities. This report summarizes the results and conclusions of RIVM's participation in the VMK project.
