24-hours total diet study 1994 - intake of
calcium, magnesium, barium, strontium and manganese

Abstract
indicatie betrokken.
In 1994 a total of 123 duplicate portions of 24-hour diets were collected, freeze-dried and analysed afterwards. Based on the analytical results the daily intakeof calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), barium (Ba), strontium (Sr) and manganese (Mn) was established for a similar number of consumers of the diets. The content of the elements mentioned was assessed in the freeze-dried matter by pressurised decomposition of sample portions followed by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) - Optical Emmision Spectrometric measurements. Results were additional to intending results of other elements. The performance characteristics of Ca, Mg and Mn measurements are verified by analysing portions of the certified reference material Total Diet of the Agricultural Research centre - Finland and repeated analyses of some diet samples. These results are satisfactory. The daily intake of Ca is 1015 mg (259 - 2955 mg), of Mg 305 mg (139 - 790 mg) en of Mn 3.6 mg (1.2 - 8.6 mg). On average the intakes agree with the recommended amounts. Quality of Ba and Sr analyses are supported only by repeated assays. Repeatability of Sr analyses is good but some results on Ba analyses appeares to be disappointing. Due to the lack of reference material the daily intakes established for both elements are indicative and amounts on average for Ba 0.48 mg, range 0.19 - 1.30, and for Sr 1.31, range 0.66 - 3.60 mg. An extreme high intake of Ba, 17.6 mg was found, remains unexplained and therefore it is not included in the aforementioned indication.
