Abstract
In 2006, RIVM has conducted a survey in newly built houses. The focus in this survey was on measuring the radon concentration, external radiation and the ventilation of these dwellings. The present report describes the set-up of this survey. Results of the survey will be published in a future report. Exposure to indoor radiation is held accountable for nearly half of the total average radiation dose received annually by Dutch citizens. The indoor radiation dose can be largely attributed to inhalation of radioactive decay products of radon and thoron. Radon and thoron are generally present in soil and building materials. Because of their gaseous nature, some of it emanates into the dwelling. Another contribution to the radiation dose originates from gamma radiation from building materials and the soil. Previous studies have led to the conclusion that radon concentrations in newly built dwellings from 1970-1990 have increased. The Ministry of Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM) has made an agreement with the building industry to bring to a hold the further rise in radiation dose due to exposure to radon and external radiation from building materials. They commissioned RIVM to conduct this survey to assess the present situation.
