This report describes the quantitative availability of measuring results in the Netherlands National Air Quality Monitoring Network in 1989. These results are compared with the demands that have been formulated in the Netherlands Air Pollution Act for sulphur dioxide (SO2) and suspended particles (black smoke), for carbon monoxide (CO) and lead (Pb) and for nitrogen dioxide (NO2). On the average, 26% of the stations do not comply with the legal quantitative demands. For the individual components these numbers are: 16 out of 81 stations (SO2), 7 out of 18 (black smoke), 6 out of 21 (CO) and 11 out of 36 (NO2). The accuracy in describing the background concentrations in the Netherlands is decreased by this loss of measuring results. For NO2 this holds for quite a number of areas in the Netherlands ; for SO2 to a lesser extent, but in the latter case it also highly depends on the location of the measuring station. As far as CO is concerned the consequences of the loss of data are of minor importance, while for black smoke no conclusions can be drawn.
