Het nucleair bedrijf Nuclear Research and Consultancy Group (NRG(Nuclear Research and consultancy Group)) in Petten meet hoeveel radioactiviteit het in het eigen afvalwater en de ventilatielucht naar de omgeving loost. De monsters hiervoor worden verspreid over het jaar genomen. Het RIVM controleert deze metingen acht keer per jaar. Met deze 'contra-expertise' controleert het RIVM of de analyses die NRG zelf uitvoert, betrouwbaar zijn. RIVM stelt vast dat de meetdata van NRG betrouwbaar zijn.
Net als in eerdere jaren komen de gamma-analyses van afvalwater uit de contra-expertise in 2022 goed overeen.
De totaal-alfa resultaten in afvalwater stemmen redelijk tot goed overeen. De overeenstemming in de totaal-bèta resultaten is matig en kan veel worden verbeterd. Dit resultaat wordt verklaard door de verschillen in de meetmethoden van NRG en het RIVM. De overeenstemming in de 3H-resultaten in afvalwater is redelijk.
De resultaten in ventilatielucht komen goed overeen. Het RIVM heeft in een aantal monsters een lage activiteitsconcentratie van 131I, 133Xe, 191Os en 203Hg gevonden. Deze waarden vallen ruim onder de detectiegrens van NRG, waardoor ze niet worden opgemerkt.
Het RIVM heeft zes keer een zeer lage totaal-alfa activiteit in ventilatielucht aangetroffen, waar NRG niets vond. De meetwaarden voor zowel totaal-alfa als totaal-bèta in ventilatielucht liggen in de range van wat er in buitenlucht zit en hebben waarschijnlijk een natuurlijke oorsprong.
Het RIVM voert de contra-expertises elk jaar uit in opdracht van de Autoriteit Nucleaire Veiligheid en Stralingsbescherming (ANVS).

NRG takes the samples of waste water and ventilation air at various time points dispersed throughout the years 2022. The RIVM performs eight times per year a contra expertise on these measurements. This form of contra-expertise is aimed at verifying and supporting the reliability of the analyses carried out by NRG. RIVM concludes that this is indeed the case. The two different sets of measurements are generally in good agreement for gammaspectrometry. The agreement in the waste water data for gross alpha is reasonable to good. The agreement in the data for gross beta in wastewater is poor, and can be improved further. This is explained by differences in the analytical methods applied by NRG and RIVM. The agreement in the 3H data is reasonable. The results obtained by RIVM and NRG in ventilation air samples compare well. RIVM detected a low gamma activity for 131I, 133Xe, 191Os and for 203Hg in some of the samples. Most of these values are well below the NRG detection limit. In six of the ventilation air samples RIVM detected a very low gross alpha activity concentration, where NRG found nothing.
