Knowledge on the composition of household waste is essential to enable support and evaluation of the governmental policy on waste materials. For that purpose yearly analyses of the composition of residual household waste are carried out. Residual household waste here is understood as household waste without the separately collected and recycled waste streams from households. The sorting analysis comprises 15 main components, most of them undergoing subsequent further analysis on sub-components, like grades of paper, kinds of plastics and different colours of glass. The portion of packaging waste from the components paper/cardboard, plastic, glass, metal and wood is also determined. This report presents the results for the years 1998 and 1999.

Kennis van de samenstelling van huishoudelijk restafval is noodzakelijk voor de onderbouwing van het afvalstoffenbeleid van de Rijksoverheid. Ten behoeve van dit beleid wordt jaarlijks de samenstelling bepaald van het huishoudelijk restafval. Huishoudelijk restafval is het huishoudelijk afval zonder de gescheiden ingezamelde afvalstoffen als GFT (Groente-, Fruit- en Tuinafval), papier en karton, glas, textiel en Kca (Klein chemische afval). In de analyse wordt het restafval opgesplitst naar 15 hoofdcomponenten. De meeste daarvan worden vervolgens verder geanalyseerd op sub-componenten, zoals soorten papier en kunststof, glas op kleur. Van de componenten papier/karton, kunststof, glas, metalen en hout wordt het aandeel verpakkingsafval vastgesteld. De resultaten hiervan zijn vooral van belang voor de monitoring van het Convenant Verpakkingen. In dit rapport zijn de resultaten vermeld van het onderzoek in 1998 en 1999.
