Here, we describe the demographic and epidemiological characteristics of HIV-positive persons in the Netherlands, registered in the ATHENA-project, along with data from HIV registration, HIV-infected children and the AIDS registration. In the ATHENA project, a clinical cohort, more than 4000 HIV-positive persons were treated with HAART in the 1998-2001 period. Data from the newly diagnosed HIV-positive individuals have been collected as from January 1 2002, by the HIV Monitoring Foundation in collaboration with 22 HIV/Aids treatment centres throughout the country. The HIV Monitoring Foundation has largely continued the organisational structure that had been established for monitoring HIV in the ATHENA project.

In dit rapport worden de demografische en epidemiologische kenmerken beschreven van personen met HIV die in Nederland geregistreerd zijn binnen het ATHENA-project, de HIV registratie, de Kinderregistratie en de AIDS-registratie. Gegevens van nieuw gediagnosticeerde HIV-positieven worden sinds januari 2002 verzameld door de Stichting HIV Monitoring via de 22 HIV-behandelcentra. Met de oprichting van deze stichting wordt de organisatorische structuur van het ATHENA-project voortgezet. Het ATHENA-project is een observationeel cohort van ruim 4000 HIV-positieve personen die in de periode 1998-2001 behandeld zijn met HAART.
