This work gives a preliminary assessment of a possible relationship between ambient dust, PAH, soot and fine dust: - In traffic dominated situations PAH, soot, CO, NO and NOx are highly correlated ; fine dust does not show any correlation with PAH and soot. - The median particle size distribution of traffic related aerosol increases with increasing distance from traffic streets; fresh aerosol, directly after automobile exhausts, is circa 0.1 mum; aged aerosol, well away from the street, increases upto some 0.2 mum. - Automatic PAH monitoring devices (based on the photo-electric effect) and automatic soot-ones (starting from absorption of white light due to black carbonaceous dust) show to be adequate, continuous, in-situ total devices ; both methods however are not component-specific.
