Abstract
A study to measure dioxin concentrations was prompted by the concern expressed by residents in the village of Drogteropslagen, located near the aluminium-smelting works. The villagers feared a possible relationship between dioxin emissions from the smelting works and increased cancer occurrence in the village. Dioxin concentrations in the top layer of the soil were measured at nine sites around the FHS aluminium-smelting works, located in nearby Dedemsvaart. The measured dioxin concentrations were found to vary from 1.5 to 5.0 ng I-TEQ/kg d.w., with an average of 3.0 ng I-TEQ/kg d.w and a standard deviation of 1.2 ng I-TEQ/kg d.w. The average measured concentration did not differ significantly from the average background concentration in the area, which had been determined in a previous study to be 3.1+-0.7 ng I-TEQ/kg d.w. Both the measurements and calculations using an air pollution dispersion model and emissions from the smelting works during the past 25 years showed a non-significant contribution of the emissions from the aluminium-smelting works to the dioxin concentrations in the soil.
