Abstract
internationale toxiciteitsequivalentie factoren (I-TEF).
jaren.
Since February 1990, dioxin levels are measured, on a regular basis, in cow's milk of dairy farms in the neighbourhood of dioxin sources such as municipal waste incinerators (MWIs) and metal reclamation plants. Levels are expressed in picograms 2,3,7,8-TCDD toxicity equivalents (TEQ) per gram of milk fat, calculated on the basis of international toxicity equivalence factors (I-TEF) for individual congeners. This report presents the results of the measurements in cow's milk of three dairy farms near the MWI of Rotterdam (Lickebaert area), the Netherlands, for the months May to September 1994. In the period January to April 1994, observed dioxin levels ranged between 5.5 +/- 0.3 and 8.1 +/- 0.4 pg TEQ/g of fat. In the period from May to September 1994, dioxin concentrations decrease to a level between 3.8 +/- 0.2 and 4.6 +/- 0.2 pg TEQ/g of fat in June and a level between 2.2 +/- 0.1 and 3.8 +/- 0.2 pg TEQ/g of fat in the months July to September 1994. Since June 1994, all dioxin levels are below the Dutch legislation level of 6 pg TEQ/g of fat. Reported data in the framework of this monitoring programme have been shown that, on a yearly basis, strong fluctuations occur in the concentration of dioxins in samples of cow's milk from the Lickebaert area collected in the period February 1990 to September 1994, with values between 2 and 14 pg TEQ/g of fat. Until now, the cause of these fluctuations have not been elucidated. The course of the dioxin levels in 1994 shows a similar pattern as observed in previous years. The observed decrease, however, results in lower values than in the same periods of preceding years.
