Abstract
The Monitoring Project on Risk Factors for Chronic Diseases (MORGEN-project) is conducted by the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). Its general purpose is to determine the prevalence of risk factors for chronic diseases as well as the prevalence of some specific chronic conditions in a sample of the general population. In 1997 approximately 3900 men and women aged 20-59 years were examined in three towns in the Netherlands (Amsterdam, Doetinchem and Maastricht). According to guidelines of the American Diabetes Association then, the prevalence of diabetes mellitus was about 4%. Hypertension was present in 8% of the men and 6% of the women. Of the men, 8% were obese and of the women 10% were obese. Hypercholesterolemia occurred in 8%. The prevalence of smoking was 41% in men and 35% in women. Inactivity during leisure time was reported in over 40% of the participants. Prevalence of hypertension, obesity and hypercholesterolemia, as well as smoking, were comparable to the prevalence in 1996.
