    Title
N-nitrosodiethanolamine (NDELA) en de N-nitrosamine problematiek in cosmetica - Een vogelperspectief
    Translated Title
N-nitrosodiethanolamine (NDELA) and the N-nitrosamine problem in cosmetics - A view from the birds-eye
    Publiekssamenvatting
The N-nitrosamine problem in cosmetics has been reviewed on behalf of the Chief Inspectorate of Health Protection (HIGB). Problem issues that emerge from this review are NDELA [N-nitroso-diethanolamine] and NMPABAO [2-ethylhexyl 4-(N-nitroso-N-methylamino)-benzoate]. Data on the NMPABAO content of Dutch retail samples are lacking and those available for NDELA date back to the early eighties. N-nitrosamines pose a potential consumer health risk and these compounds should not be present in cosmetic products. Since 1992 legal guidelines that restrict the occurrence of N-nitrosamines in cosmetics are operational in the European Union. It is advised to analyse a selected number of Dutch retail samples for NDELA and NMPABAO and to develop an appropriate method of analysis. A combination of capillary gas chromatography and chemiluminescence detection with a Thermal Energy Analyzer (TEA) is estimated to be best suitable for this.
