When alkaline contaminant-holding waste materials are re-used in the environment their percolates may strongly alter the chemistry of the soil and groundwater underneath. We carried out laboratory column experiments to study this. Three alkaline solid waste materials, phosphorus slag, steel slag and MSWI bottom were percolated with artificial acid rain water. Subsequently, waste percolates were passed through different sandy soils with varying soil properties. The mobility of chemical components in the soil columns was linearly correlated to soil properties like organic carbon and hydrous oxide content of the soils.
