The RIVM has developed a guideline to accurately determine, for a specific location, the amount of lead in soil that may pose a risk to human health. Such a determination will allow a more accurate risk assessment of lead-contaminated soil. Many sites in the Netherlands are contaminated with lead. Lead intoxication puts especially children at risk, since they are assumed to swallow, on average, 100 mg soil per day via dirty hands. However, not all the lead will become bioavailable in the human body after ingestion. Part of the lead remains soil-bound in the gastrointestinal tract, for example, and will be excreted via feces. However, lead released into the blood circulation can cause a (potential) risk to human health. The guideline serves to assist in determining the bioavailable lead from soil, in other words, the amount of lead that reaches the blood. On absorption, the lead may cause adverse effects. This guideline describes how soil samples should be collected, handled and tested. These samples are tested with an artificial gastrointestinal tract to obtain a relative bioavailability factor (a measure of the bioavailable lead in soil). This factor can be used to assess the human health risk using a specific exposure model (Sanscrit). This guideline is intended for laboratories with an interest in determining the bioavailability of lead from soil with a method that makes risk assessment more realistic and, in most cases, less conservative. Laboratories are requested by the RIVM to return their results for database-screening. The relationship between soil characteristics and bioavailability of lead might, in future, result in estimation of the oral bioavailability of lead from soil on the basis of simple soil properties.
