This annual report, 'The quality of drinking water in the Netherlands in 2005', highlights the results of the monitoring programmes of the Water Supply companies over the year 2005. The Inspectorate for VROM (Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment) is responsible for upholding the Drinking Water Act, reporting both to the Minister and the Dutch parliament. RIVM manages the data and produces the annual report, while testing the quality data according to the standards for the Drinking-Water Act. The regulations on the quality of the drinking water were, also in 2004, well-observed. The number of drinking-water treatment plants (43=20%) with one or more non-compliances decreased in 2004 with 11% and this number is the lowest since 2002. This amounted to 60 - 90 treatment plants over the 1992-2005 period. A large number of the non-compliances are incidental. Three pesticides showed a single non-compliance. The concentration of nickel was found to be structurally higher than the standard in drinking water at one treatment plant. This was due to the groundwater quality. The Minister extended the derogation period for the water supply companie to 31 December 2006. Compliance for the parameter, three halomethanes, on two sites occured for the year 2005, after UV disinfection has been introduced in 2004. Legionella was only detected twice in treated water from 196 treatment plants (non-pathogen species); however, Legionella was detected in drinking water at 22 locations in the distribution system in relatively low numbers. These bacteria belong most probably to a non-pathogenic species. The legislation for Legionella prevention came into force at the end of December 2004. In conclusion, none of the non-compliances caused an impact on public health. The quality of the drinking water in general is good.
