dc.description.abstractThe Laboratory of Soil and Groundwater Research (LBG) of the RIVM has started several new monitoring studies for determining the environmental quality of soil, including the analysis of organic compounds. The project 'Mapping soil quality 1992' has been used to develop new methods for analyzing these groups of compounds or to optimize conventional methods to reach lower limits of determination. In this report, method development is described for the analysis of 13 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (16 EPA-PAH except naphthalene, acenaphthene en acenaphthylene) ; 15 polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), i.e. indicator PCBs with IUPAC-nos. 28, 52, 101, 138, 153 and 180, and mono-ortho PCBs with IUPAC-nos. 60, 74, 105, 114, 118, 156, 157, 167 and 189 ; and organochloropesticides (OCs). Method development has resulted in a combined sample pretreatment and clean-up for the analysis of PAHs, PCBs and lindane (y-HCH). After extraction with acetone/light petroleum, a clean-up on deactivated alumina with sodium sulphite and sodium hydroxide has been performed to remove sulphur components from the extracts. Next, further chromatography on silica with sulphuric acid is necessary for the analysis of PCBs and lindane. The final methods resulted in lower limits of determination for all compounds than in previous methods, i.e. 1 to 10 mug/kg dry matter for PAHs and 0.1 mug/kg dry matter for PCBs and lindane. Triazines have been analyzed using existing methods with a limit of determination of 10 mug/kg dry matter. PAHs were found in all samples of this study, with a median concentration level between 5 and 100 mug/kg dry matter, in some samples upto 1 mg/kg dry matter. PCB concentrations were low, from below determination limit of 0.1 to a maximum of 2.0 mug/kg dry matter ; levels for lindane varied between 0.2 en 2.0 mug/kg dry matter. Triazines were found in nine samples (43 samples in total). Individual samples were found to have large differences in concentrations of organic components. No effect could be distinguished for the different factors, the use and type of soil, and the location.<br>

html.description.abstractIn het kader van de nieuwe opzet van een aantal meetnetten bij LBG, waarbinnen bemonstering van de bodem en bepaling van de gehalten van onder andere een aantal organische componenten in bodemmonsters centraal staat, is de kwaliteitskartering van 1992 aanleiding geweest om voor deze stofgroepen methoden te ontwikkelen of bestaande analysemethoden verder te optimaliseren om de gewenste lage bepalingsgrenzen te halen. In dit rapport wordt de ontwikkeling van nieuwe methoden voor de bepaling van 13 polycyclische aromatische koolwaterstoffen (PAK&apos;s) (16 EPA-PAK&apos;s met uitzondering van naftaleen, acenafteen, en acenaftyleen) ; 15 polychloorbifenylen (PCB&apos;s), te weten de indicator PCB&apos;s met IUPAC-nrs. 28, 52, 101, 138, 153 en 180, en de mono-ortho PCB&apos;s met IUPAC-nrs. 60, 74, 105, 114, 118, 156, 157, 167 en 189 ; en organochloorbestrijdingsmiddelen (OC&apos;s) beschreven. De ontwikkeling van de methode heeft geresulteerd in een gezamenlijke monstervoorbewerking en zuivering voor de analyse van PAK&apos;s, PCB&apos;s en lindaan (y-HCH). Na een tweevoudige extractie met aceton/petroleumether wordt een zuivering over gedesactiveerde aluminiumoxide, beladen met natriumsulfiet, en natriumhydroxide, uitgevoerd om met name zwavelverbindingen in de extrakten te verwijderen. Voor de PCB- en lindaan-analyse is vervolgens nog een zuivering over silica, beladen met zwavelzuur noodzakelijk. De methode resulteert voor alle componenten in lagere bepalingsgrenzen dan voorheen mogelijk waren, te weten van 1 tot 10 mug/kg d.s. voor de verschillende PAK&apos;s en 0.1 mug/kg d.s. voor de PCB&apos;s en lindaan. Voor de triazines is een bestaande methode toegepast ; de bepalingsgrens bedraagt hierbij 10 mug/kg d.s. In alle monsters van dit onderzoek naar de bodemkwaliteitskartering werden PAK&apos;s aangetroffen op een mediaan-niveau tussen 5 mug/kg d.s. en 100 mug/kg d.s., met enkele uitschieters tot 1 mg/kg droge stof. PCB&apos;s komen op laag niveau (onder de bepalingsgrens van 0.1 tot maximaal 2.0 mug/kg d.s.) in de monsters voor ; lindaan gehalten varieren tussen 0.2 en 2.0 mug/kg d.s. Triazines worden slechts in negen van de 43 monsters aangetroffen.
