This report presents the most common long-term diseases, health problems and complaints in children (aged 0-18 years). We investigated what percentage of children in the Netherlands suffers from eczema, asthma, hay fever, allergy, headache, fatigue, sleeping problems, back pain, depressive symptoms, hyperactivity and ADHD, abdominal pain, constipation or overweight, as well as the effects of these chronic conditions on a child's daily life. Our study follows on previous research which indicated that in the Netherlands one in five children are suffering from a chronic condition. Of the chronic conditions mentioned above, most young children (age 0-11 years) visit the general practitioner for asthma, eczema and abdominal pain, and most older children for asthma, headache, fatigue, back pain and abdominal pain. Every year, 2%-5% of Dutch children visit the general practitioner for one of these chronic conditions. However, not all children go to the general practitioner. The percentage of children with self-reported chronic conditions, like headache and chronic fatigue, is substantially higher than the percentage of children visiting a general practitioner for one of these conditions. In some studies more than half of the teenage girls reported to suffer from chronic fatigue or headaches. The percentage of children with abdominal pain, hay fever, sleeping problems, depressive symptoms and overweight is also considerably higher than general practitioner registrations suggest. Current knowledge of the consequences of chronic conditions is insufficient. Two to three percent of all children experience serious limitations in daily functioning due to a chronic health condition. Studies show a variety of problems, including combinations of physical and psychological complaints, decreased quality of life and a higher rate of school absence. However, although hundreds of thousands of children suffer from the chronic conditions studied, the available evidence is insufficient to judge to what extent children's development, their social participation and therefore their future are affected.
