An experimental procedure is described to quantify the association of heavy metals with complexing agents in natural aquatic systems using voltammetry. Quantification is expressed by the (average) stability K of the complex system. The method is based on the behaviour of the voltammetric current of a metal solution at a low concentration as a function of addition of the natural sample. The experimental set-up takes into account metal sorption onto vessel components, which usually appears at these low metal concentrations. Furthermore, the calculation procedure of the stability from the voltammetric data also takes into account the simultaneous transport of free and complexed metal to the surface of the electrode. The applicability of the method is illustrated for a number of heavy metals (Cu, Pb and Zn) and two different traces, i.e. surface water and human digestion fluids.
