    Title
Risico's emissie ethyleenoxide in Zoetermeer (1973-2010)
    Translated Title
Risk of emission of ethylene oxide in Zoetermeer (1973 - 2010)
    Publiekssamenvatting

Several thousands of people, having lived or worked in the immediate vicinity of Sterigenics in Zoetermeer, have been exposed to ethylene oxide. Until 1990 this could be explained by a lack of emission control. Later it was found that the afterburner, installed in 1991, had not been functioning properly. This exposure may have given rise to extra cases of cancer among the so exposed. For those who lived all the time close to the sites, there was an excess risk of 10 - 60 per 100.000. Those who lived or worked there for shorter periods have stood an equally lower chance of contracting cancer through exposure to ethylene oxide.
People living or working farther away in Zoetermeer, have also been exposed to ethylene oxide albeit to much lower concentrations. Their risks are smaller, around 1 - 3 per 100.000 for long-term exposure. Those who lived or worked there for shorter periods have stood an equally lower chance of contracting cancer through exposure to ethylene oxide.
These are the findings of a risk assessment by the RIVM on the request of the municipality of Zoetermeer. This assessment was severely hampered by lack of data on emission en distribution in the environment especially before the year 2000. Therefore we used a worst case approach and we consulted a number of experts.
