This report describes most foreign data sets for environmental research and reporting present at the RIVM. The origin of the data reflects RIVM's position as a data user rather than a data source: most data sets have their origin outside the institute and are being used as input in modelling and assessment studies. This catalog is more than its predecessor (Dorf, 1993), based on the developing system for regular description of data sets at the RIVM. In fact, inserting the meta-data and compiling this catalog has put this system to the test and provided useful pointers to aspects that needed improvement. For one thing, the effort and time required to get an overview of available data still has to be brought down by an order of magnitude (from the present 10 months to a few weeks). Second, the quality checking and labelling procedures have to be applied energetically, now that elementary tools are beginning to become available. These and other aspects hinge on rigorous discipline in data administration, which in turn depends on priorities reflected by the management of the institute. This catalog is a product of a project called International Data Management RIVM (IDM). This is in turn related to the RIVM project cluster Global Environmental Assessment, Reporting and Forecasting - as this cluster is at the root of the most far-going needs for international data at the RIVM. Next to regular documentation of RIVM's environmentally relevant data sets, the IDM project aims at developing a data management plan, data acquisition plans and regular cooperation with major data suppliers.
