Orienterende Evaluatie Gezondheidsrisico door Metalen in Tatoeages
    Translated Title
Preliminary evaluation of health risks due to metals in tattoos
    Publiekssamenvatting

Recent investigations by the Dutch Health Inspectorate have revealed that tattoo colours frequently contain metals. We conducted a preliminary evaluation of the health risks to which consumers may be exposed and conclude that the presence of the metals is not very likely to cause long-term toxic reactions in internal organs of those with tattoos. An exception is made, however, for chromium which, when present in the valence state of +6, can produce such toxic effects. In addition, an increased cancer risk is expected when tattoos contain chromium+6. The possible local effects (on the treated skin site) produced by metals in tattoos can be assessed to a limited degree only based on present knowledge. Nevertheless it can be concluded that the probability of local effects will be high where chromium (+6) or nickel are present in tattoos. Further, it is known from dermatological practice that cadmium, cobalt and mercury in tattoos may produce adverse skin reactions.
