    Title
Periode 2009
    Translated Title
Contra-expertise on the determination of radioactivity of waste water and ventilation air of COVRA N.V. Period 2009
    Publiekssamenvatting

Within the framework of a monitoring programme, the RIVM measures the release of radioactivity into the waste water and atmosphere of COVRA N.V.. Measurements are carried out eight times per year. This form of counterexpertise is aimed at verifying and supporting the reliability of the analyses carried out by COVRA. The two different sets of measurements are generally in agreement, as is also the case in 2009 for gamma-emitters, gross-alpha, tritium and carbon-14. The few discrepancies that were observed in 2009 concern some gross-beta results from RIVM and the rest-beta results from COVRA. Nevertheless, the overall agreement is reasonable. This is regarding the fact that RIVM and COVRA apply different measuring principles.

The results for gross-alpha and gross-beta obtained obtained by RIVM and COVRA in ventilation air samples taken from the waste treatment building are generally in good agreement. The gamma emitter 125I was found by both RIVM and COVRA in only one ventilation air sample, with reasonable agreement. 3H was found with reasonable agreement, and 14C with good agreement.

Both RIVM and COVRA found no gamma-emitters, and no gross-alpha or grossbeta activity in ventilation air from HABOG. Only a few traces of 3H and 14C were found, in good agreement.

RIVM analyzed eight waste water samples and eight samples of ventilation air taken by COVRA at various time points dispersed throughout 2009. The analyses were carried out on behalf of the Department of Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguards of the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM).
