    Title
    Informatiesysteem Medische Stralingstoepassingen: een pilotstudie
    Translated Title
A pilot study on the Information system for medical radiation applications
    Publiekssamenvatting
A pilot study was carried out as part of a project for realising an information system for medical radiation applications. In this pilot study recent available data on medical applications of radiation and patient doses were collected and analysed. The study was meant to explain choices on set-up and organisation of the information system made in a parallel definition study. Diagnostic and therapeutic applications were distinguished because of the differences in the intended effect of the radiation. The average annual effective dose experienced by a member of the population is estimated from medical examinations at about 0.6 mSv. Approximately 87% is due to intramural X-ray procedures, 11% to diagnostic nuclear medicine procedures and 1.6% to extramural X-ray exams. The largest shortcoming in the part of the study on diagnostics has to do with patient doses during radiological examinations, which are actually only known for a few hospitals. Therapeutic use of radiation is subdivided into radiotherapy and nuclear medicine. The data presented for radiotherapy provides insight into the nature and volume of the practice. Aggregation of data on patient doses has been concluded for the moment as not being worthwhile. There were hardly any data collected on nuclear medicine.
