The work reported here is conducted in the context of a project with the aim to gain insight into the presence and structure of phreatic metazoen communities in relation to physicochemical conditions. The ultimate goal is to detect how land-use management impacts the ecological properties of ground water. Emphasis is laid on shallow groundwater systems because they are most closely linked to soil conditions and influenced by land-use practices. Due to practical limitations the study is restricted to the ground water below dairy farms situated on sandy soils. The character of the study is descriptive and surveying. Emphasis is on meiofauna communities and their temporal and spatial heterogeneity. Physico-chemical groundwater composition differed considerably between sampling points and could be grouped at farm level. No clear differences between the data of the extensive and intensive managed farms appeared to be present. Despite these differences hardly any differentiation in composition and abundance of meiofauna communities exists. Reasons are of methodological, statistical (small numbers) and biological nature. Biologically slight community differences are caused by a low taxonomic resolution, large ecological amplitudes of species and strongly dominating system-related environmental conditions which dominate small soil property and land-use associated conditions. Because of these practical and fundamental imperatives it is concluded that monitoring animal communities of shallow sandy aquifers has not the potential of providing applicable information for environmental management.
