Every year the RIVM makes an inventory of developments that may be relevant for Dutch policymakers with regard to drinking water policy and enforcement. The developments are categorized into four themes: microbiology, micropollutants, drinking water sources and prospective issues. This report also presents an overview of RIVM reports that were published in 2010 - 2011 and are relevant to drinking water supply. Focus areas for drinking water policy: One focus area within the theme of microbiology relates to the possible effects of climate change on the yearly number of cases of illness related to infectious diseases transmitted through water and food. The RIVM has developed a tool for estimating the effect of climate change on the risk of infection through different transmission routes, for example, consuming drinking water or swimming in surface waters. In addition, where necessary, measures such as those for improving wastewater treatment plants can be determined by using this tool. Within the theme micropollutants, plant protection products are a focus area. The number of substances occurring in sources for drinking water production has been stable for several years. Therefore, the intended reduction in the level of purification treatment required for the production of drinking water cannot be achieved. Furthermore, the authorization and market placement of plant protection products is currently being changed. Water companies are afraid that this might lead to deterioration in the quality of the sources for drinking water. Within the theme drinking water sources, the increasing claim on underground space in the Netherlands has been pointed out, for example, such as that used for Thermal Energy Storage or the possible extraction of shale gas. However, at present there is insufficeint knowledge on the impacts of the above points on the environment and drinking water production.\ Within the theme prospective issues, the demand for drinking water versus the availability and quality of drinking water resources is among the focus points for the drinking water supply in the Netherlands up to 2040. Social media: In 2011, social media were screened for the first time for issues related to drinking water. Some of the issues mentioned above are also being discussed on social media sites such as LinkedIn. On YouTube, educational videos about water are popular. The warning function of the updates issued via Twitter with respect to new issues, appears to be limited.
