    Publiekssamenvatting
    De belangrijkste resultaten en aanbevelingen van een workshop getiteld "QSARs for HPV-Chemicals for predicting Biodegradation" worden beschreven. In de literatuur zijn verschillende modellen beschreven voor het voorspellen van het verloop van biodegradatie. Een beperkt aantal van deze modellen zijn geschikt om gebruikt te worden voor prioriteitsstelling en risicobeoordeling van uiteenlopende organische verbindingen. Geconcludeerd werd dat er een gebrek is aan betrouwbare, consistente data die geschikt zijn voor het afleiden van nieuw voorspellende modellen. Er is vooralsnog onvoldoende kennis voorhanden aangaande de primaire processen die plaats vinden tijdens biodegradatie en de invloed van milieufactoren op deze processen, waardoor het moeilijk is gebiedsdekkende, inter- en extrapolerende modellen te ontwikkelen. Voor de nabije toekomst valt de belangrijkste vooruitgang te verwachten van het standardiseren van biodegradatietesten en de hiermee te genereren biodegradatie-data. Aanbevolen wordt om voor verdere uitbouw van voorspellingsmethoden voor biodegradatie uit te gaan van het basisniveau voor wat betreft biodegradatie: het modelleren van de active site interacties binnen enzymen, om de hierdoor gegenereerde kennis vervolgens op te schalen naar interacties op microbieel niveau onder reeele milieuomstandigheden.<br>
    The main findings and recommendations are given of a workshop on "QSARs for HPV-Chemicals for predicting Biodegradation". The main finding of the workshop was that at first glance, biodegradation seems to lack order. Nevertheless, in literature several models for predicting the course of biodegradative pathways have been reported. A limited number of these models are suited for use in risk assessment or priority setting. It was concluded that there is a lack of reliable and consistent data that can be used to derive new predictive models for biodegradation. There still is insufficient knowledge of the basic processes that take place during biodegradation, and the influence of environmental conditions. This severely hinders the extrapolation of results obtained in the laboratory to realistic field conditions. In the near future the major advancements should be expected in the standardization and unification of biodegradation tests as well as biodegradation data. This will strongly facilitate the development of new models for environmentally relevant biodegradation end-points. It is recommended that in future work more attention should be paid to better understanding of the process modelled. One of the procedures would be to start at the basic level of biodegradation: modelling the biotransformation reactions at the enzymatic level, and subsequently follow a stepwise approach towards understanding of the same reactions at the microbial level in the 'real' environment.<br>

    Export search results
