    Translated Title
Increasing costs of pharmaceutical help: evidence from theory and practice
    Publiekssamenvatting
The annual costs of pharmaceutical aid went up by 6% in the Netherlands in the period 1989-1997, while in 1998 costs increased by more than 10%. The factors influencing costs of pharmaceutical aid were investigated in this preliminary study. In general a great number of determinants of volume and drug prices were identified in the literature. These determinants were analysed for three groups of drugs. The yearly influence of growing and greying of the population was determined at 1.5% for cholesterol-lowering drugs, and at 1.0% for both antidepressant drugs and drugs for asthma/COPD, while total yearly increases in volume were 37.4, 18.5 and 4.9% respectively. The influence of other determinants on volume could not be quantified. The determinants of drug prices are highly influenced by specific policy measures in the Netherlands. The results of this study provided evidence to support the need to extend and improve the registration of costs, volumes and prices of drugs. Several recommendations are made in this respect.
