This report describes the results of a study on the occurrence of the seventeen toxic polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in eight cheese samples of cheese from a dairy farm at Maassluis, in the Lickebaert area. The corresponding cheese batches were produced at different times in the period between september, 1987 and July, 1989. The samples were collected in August, 1989 and analysed in early 1990. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between the dioxin levels in cheese and in milk and to obtain information on dioxin levels in milk from earlier periods and insight in dioxin emission rates of AVR municipal waste incinerator. Dioxin levels in cheese, produced at different times before 1989, were a factor of two above the critical level of 6 pg TEQ/g of fat. A decrease of the dioxin levels by a factor of two has been observed in the period from March to July 1989. Dioxin levels of the samples from June and July 1989 were comparable to those in milk. These levels have been stabilized after July 1989 at a constant level below 6 pg TEQ/g of fat. The significant and persistent decrease of the dioxin level in cheese and milk, observed for the period March till June 1989, seems to coincide with the modernisation of the ovens of the AVR.<br>
