Title
Translated Title
The immunity of the Dutch Population against mumps; evaluation of the Dutch National Immunisation Programme
Publiekssamenvatting
Antibodies against mumps were measured in the Dutch general population and in municipalities with low vaccine coverage, where religious groups that refuse vaccination are clustered socially and geographically. The overall prevalence in the general population was high (95,2%, 95% confidence limits (CL) 94,5-95,7%); the seroprevalence (91,0%, 95%-CL 89,9-92,2%) and geometric mean titer (GMT) (129 RU/ml, 95%-CL 122-136 RU/ml)) of age groups with vaccine induced immunity were significantly lower than those of age groups with naturally acquired immunity (97,5%, 95%-CL 96,8-98,1% and 180 RU/ml, 95%-CL 171-189 RU/ml respectively). The seroprevalence and GMT (97,5%, 95%-CL 88,8-100,0% and 147 RU/ml, 95%-CI 83-263 RU/ml) for 5-9 year old orthodox reformed participants suggest that wild mumps virus may still circulate in municipalities with low vaccine coverage; due to the lower seroprevalence of the 20-24 year olds (94,5%, 95%-CL 92,2-96,9%) compared to the 25-79 year olds (97,5%, 95%-CL 96,8-98,1%), the circulation in the general population seems to have decreased right after the introduction of mass vaccination.)
