The National Institute of Health and Environment has developed a new method for the determination of the concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) in air. The method is suitable for fast measurements on site during environmental incidents. PAH, from which some components are carcinogenic, are hazardous in the air when they exceed human health limiting values. These organic components are formed and released from fires. The method is applicable for the measurement of the air concentration of particulate bounded PAH on the spot. The measurement results are reported within one hour to evaluate the risk of exposure for human and environment. The RIVM is capable to inform the local authorities on the spot of the environmental incident, whereas it took several days in the past.
