Nowadays, high numbers of cyanobacteria dominate Dutch inland surface waters. Several species of cyanobacteria have the property to produce toxines, causing poisoning of zooplankton, fish, birds and mammals, including man. Increasing numbers of health problems after bathing in surface waters of bacteriologically good quality according to Dutch Standards were noticed in the past few years. Studies on phytoplankton composition indicated a relationship between incidents of health problems and cyanobacterial blooms. A peak in health complaints in the summer of 1994 prompted the national health authorities to assess cyanobacterial toxicity in seven lakes in the Rijnland Waterboard region. Five samples nere shown positive in the mouse bioassay. Based on the symptoms during the observation period and on pathological anatomy it was concluded that the poisoning was caused by hepatotoxins. The presence of Microcystis aeruginosa in all toxic samples suggests that this species was the major source of toxin production, although it cannot be excluded that the toxin partly originated from Anabaena species. In the two non-toxic samples the phytoplankton was dominated by Microcystis aeruginosa and Anabaena spiroides, respectively, two potential toxin producers. The lack of toxic effect could be due to either low or total absence of toxin production in these strains. At the observed toxicity levels it is highly unlikely, that humans will swallow a lethal dose of cyanotoxins while swimming. However, in cyanobacterial scums toxin concentrations may be many-fold higher. Furthermore, the hazardous effect of sublethal doses should be considered. From this study it can only be concluded that a high coincidence was shown between the presence of toxic cyanobacteria and human health problems, since other causes cannot be excluded. Recommendations for future studies are focused on a better assessment of the relationship between toxic cyanobacteria and health risks.
