Title
Investigation of a screening battery for immunotoxicity of pharmaceuticals using verapamil as a model compound
Translated Title
Verapamil is a calcium entry blocker without known immunotoxic potential in vivo. This pharmaceutical was tested in a 28-day repeated dose oral toxicity study in rats. The protocol was extended with Tier I immunotoxicity screening parameters. The experiment was one in a series of four experiments on the suitability of this Tier I approach for immunotoxicity testing of pharmaceuticals. As expected, no evidence of immunotoxic potential was found. Together with the studies performed previously, it is concluded that the rat Tier I approach is a suitable tool to detect the immunotoxic potential of pharmaceuticals.
