    Title
Bacteriological collaborative study III amongst the National Reference Laboratories for Salmonella
    Translated Title
Bacteriologisch ringonderzoek III met de Nationale Referentie Laboratoria voor Salmonella
    Publiekssamenvatting
A third bacteriological collaborative study was organized by the Community Reference Laboratory for Salmonella. All National Reference Laboratories for Salmonella (NRL) participated. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the results of the detection of different contamination levels (10 and 100 cfp/capsule) of Salmonella Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium in the presence of competitive micro-organisms among and within the NRLs. As method an adapted ISO 6579 (proposed reference method) and, optionally, the laboratory's own routine method for the detection of Salmonella in chicken faeces was used. Significant differences were found between and within the laboratories. None of the laboratories succeeded to isolate Salmonella from all capsules containing 10 colony forming particles. The number of positives found strongly differed between laboratories. With semi-solid media significantly more samples were found positive for Salmonella, especially for the samples containing S. Enteritidis compared to the reference method.
