Title
Translated Title
Calculated ammonia concentrations in the Netherlands compared with measured concentrations of the additional passive sampler network
Publiekssamenvatting
From September 2000 to September 2001 the ammonia concentrations in air were measured on a monthly basis at 159 locations in the Netherlands using passive samplers. Goals were to: a) check the representativeness of the ammonia concentration measurement locations in the National Air Quality Monitoring Network (LML in Dutch), b) discover the spatial pattern of the ammonia concentration in the Netherlands and c) determine the level of success in simulating the concentration pattern with the OPS model. Part of the research was reported by Velders et al. (2002). This report presents a comparison between measured and calculated concentrations with the OPS model on the basis of ammonia emissions in the Netherlands and direct surroundings. Special attention is paid to the representativeness of the measurement locations. The passive samplers were placed at representative locations with respect to the spatial pattern of the ammonia emissions. A relatively larger amount of the ammonia measurement stations in the LML are located in areas with high emissions. In general, the spatial pattern of the ammonia concentrations at the 159 locations was found to be well-represented by the OPS model. The calculations came to about 30% lower than the measurements, which is in agreement with results in previous years on the basis of the regular LML stations. The comparison between measured and modelled concentrations was improved by using more detailed emission inventories (from a scale of 5x5 km to 500x500 m). The comparison between measured and modelled concentrations shows no clear spatial pattern. In principle, a representative ammonia concentration for the Netherlands can still be achieved working from the LML stations. However, since local conditions in the direct surroundings of the measurement locations may severely disturb the measurements and the comparison with model calculations, the local conditions should be monitored regularly.
