In 2010, the number of reports of foodborne infections to the Health Care Inspectorate (IGZ) and the new Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (nVWA) was comparable to that in 2009 although the total number of cases did increase. As in previous years, Salmonella, Campylobacter and norovirus were the most important etologic agents. Salmonella was the most frequent causative agent in the reported cases and was responsible for almost all hospital admissions and for all three reported deaths. These are the main conclusions drawn from an analysis of the 2010 registers of the nVWA and IGZ carried out by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). To prevent outbreaks, the government, producers, suppliers and the hotel and catering industry, but also consumers, need to pay continuous attention to all aspects of food safety. Special care should be taken to prevent contamination during the production of food that will be eaten raw or undercooked, to implement good hygienic practices during food processing and to prevent cross contamination during the preparation and storage of food. In 2010, the nVWA received 432 reports of foodborne infections compared to 458 reports in 2009. The number of cases increased slightly (1178 patients in 2010 and 1143 in 2009). The number of reports registered by the IGZ was, after a decrease in 2009 (35 reports), back to the level of 2004-2008 (about 45 reports annually). The total number of cases in 2010 (355 patients) was comparable to that of 2009 (342 patients), but the percentage of hospitalizations was higher: 21% (2009: 9%; 2008: 11%; 2007: 16%). The RIVM estimates the actual number of foodborne infections and intoxications to be between 300,000 and 1,230,000 cases per year. The number of reports is, however, lower as not all infected patients visit their GP or inform the nVWA, and clusters of patients are underreported.
