Each member state of the EU is obliged to report on the (chemical) status of groundwater bodies every six years, starting in 2009. In the Netherlands, this status assessment is carried out at the provincial level by groundwater managers working in close conjunction with the local Water Boards and municipalities. The RIVM has recently established a protocol that provides guidance to Dutch groundwater managers for carrying out these assessment procedures in an unambiguous and uniform manner. The Netherlands is categorized into 23 groundwater bodies. In accordance with the European Water Framework Directive, these bodies must achieve a good chemical and quantitative status by - at the latest - 2015. This protocol is based on European directives, guidance documents and published reports. Lessons learned from an evaluation of the first status assessment by all stakeholders, carried out in the summer of 2008, were used to refine the protocol.
