All medicines produced and used in Europe must comply with the legal requirements imposed by the European Pharmacopoeia. If such a law book should cease to exist, then the laws for the admission and manufacture of medicines would become unclear, with possible risks to public health as an outcome. The legal nature of these requirements ensures that the quality of medicines is comparable and interchangeable throughout Europe. The European Pharmacopoeia consequently facilitates the accessibility of high quality medicines to Europeans and their animals. This is a conclusion drawn from an RIVM study, carried out on behalf of the Dutch Health Care Inspectorate (IGZ), which describes the importance of this legal standard. Dutch experts who contribute to the European Pharmacopoeia were interviewed for this study. These experts were mainly representatives from (semi-)governmental organisations and the pharmaceutical industry. They consider it important that the Netherlands actively contributes to the development and maintenance of the European Pharmacopoeia. In this way the Netherlands can voice its opinion and exchange experiences with other medicine-producing countries. The experts consider it extremely important that the European Pharmacopoeia continues as a public regulator for the manufacture of medicines.
