    Translated Title
Health promotion and preventive medicine in schools. Current situation, effectiveness and experiences of Municipal Health Services and schools
    Publiekssamenvatting

Health promotion and preventive medicine in schools is worth the effort. There are health promotion programmes for schools that contribute to healthier behaviour in pupils, higher academic achievements and a reduction in school drop-out levels. Such measures are more effective when they are structurally implemented in schools and the set up is integral. Approximately 60 percent of the Municipal Health Services (GGD) support schools in their efforts to tackle health promotion and preventive measures in a systematic and integral fashion.
This can be concluded from a report produced by the Research Institute, TNO Quality of Life, and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) as commissioned by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS). The report contains a number of recommendations regarding the strengthening of health promotion in the educational sector. The most important of these are: link up well with the specific questions that a school has, improve the skills of professionals involved in health promotion interventions, provide practical support to schools and professionals regarding the approach to and implementation of the measures, and increase the level of acceptance for the measures throughout the whole educational sector.
The GGD authorities and schools are positive about the systematic approach because it helps health promotion to be included more easily in the policies and the daily activities of schools. However, professionals do need to have practical pointers on how to implement the measures step by step.
TNO has studied the effects of health promotion in the educational sector regarding lifestyle, academic achievements and the drop-out figures in the international literature. The RIVM has studied the current situation regarding systematic health promotion in primary and secondary education in the Netherlands.
