dc.description.abstractEmission measurements at the municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) ROTEB at Rotterdam show an average dioxin concentration in the stack gas of 92 ng TEQ/Nm3 (dry, 11% oxygen) when expressed in 2,3,7,8-TCDD toxicity equivalents (TEQ). This concentration is considered to be rather high for this type of installation. Also when compared with other types of MSWIs in the Netherlands. The yearly emission of these dioxins from this installation is estimated at 107 g TEQ. According to dispersion model calculations this emission contributes considerably to the yearly mean deposition in the surroundings, viz. on average 21 ng TEQ/(m2.year) over an area of 20x20 km2 with a maximum of 161 ng TEQ/(m2.year) at 700 m North-East of the installation. Background depositions are estimated at 30 ng TEQ/(m2.year). The nearby MSWI AVR contributes about 20 ng TEQ/(m2.year) to this background level in the vicinity of ROTEB. The main deposition region covers an urban region of the town of Rotterdam. Dioxin load is high on the nearest soil in agricultural use. According to model calculations the standard of 6 pg TEQ per g milk fat will not be exceeded over a longer period of time. From a statistical point of view however, it can not be excluded that incidentally the average monthly dioxin concentration exceeds this standard.<br>
