In response to the new European air quality directive 2008/50/EC, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has revised the Dutch monitoring strategy for levels of benzene in the air. For this purpose, three recommendations have been made. Based on three scenarios, the RIVM has proposed a future reduction in the number of benzene monitoring stations in the Netherlands to five locations. This will meet the minimum monitoring requirements outlined in the directive. Moreover, it will enable trends at busy traffic stations to be followed. Lower benzene concentrations mean fewer monitoring stations are necessary Since the first few years of this century, benzene air concentrations in Europe have dropped as a result of measures taken to address emissions. The new directive states that fewer monitoring stations are sufficient when concentrations are lower. Due to the decrease in benzene air levels, the minimum number of stations for the Netherlands has been put at three. To ensure a good view of current trends, it has been decided to work with five monitoring stations. This will amount to two street stations, two urban stations and one rural station. At one of the urban stations, other compounds known as ozone precursors - leading to the formation of ozone - will also be monitored.
