Contra-expertise on the determination of radioactivity of waste water and ventilation air of COVRA N.V. : Period 2011Publiekssamenvatting
Within the framework of a monitoring programme, RIVM measures the release of radioactivity into water and ventilation air of COVRA N.V. Measurements are carried out eight times per year. This form of counter-expertise is aimed at verifying and supporting the reliability of the analyses carried out by COVRA. The two different sets of measurements are generally in agreement, as is also the case in 2011 for gamma-emitters, gross-alpha, tritium and 14C. Considering the fact that RIVM and COVRA apply different measuring principles the agreement in the 14C results in waste water is good.
The results for gross-alpha and gross-beta obtained by RIVM and COVRA in ventilation air samples of the waste treatment building are generally in good agreement. The gamma emitter 125I was not found by RIVM, and in only one case by COVRA. Both 3H and 14C were found with reasonable to good agreement.
RIVM observed a very low amount of 131I from the high activity waste storage building. This originates most likely from the Fukushima reactor accident in March, 2011. No other gamma emitters, gross-alpha or gross-beta activity were found by RIVM and COVRA in ventilation air from the high activity waste storage building. Traces of 3H and 14C were found in good agreement.
RIVM analyzed eight waste water samples and eight samples of ventilation air from both the waste treatment building and the high activity waste storage building. These samples were taken by COVRA at various time points dispersed throughout 2011. The analyses were carried out on behalf of the Department of Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguards of the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate, Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment.
