    Title
Verbeterde actuele luchtkwaliteitskaarten : Validatie interpolatiemethode RIO Nederland
    Translated Title
Improved real-time air quality maps : validation interpolation method RIO Netherlands
    Publiekssamenvatting

The RIVM has evaluated a new air quality evaluation tool that enables estimates of current concentrations of the air pollutants nitrogen dioxide, ozone and particulate matter to be calculated on an hourly basis for all areas in the Netherlands. Compared to estimates obtained using current technology, the calculated estimates of nitrogen dioxide concentrations in urban areas, in particular, are more in line with the measured values. The results from this study have led to the decision that the new technique will replace the current method in the near future.

The website of the National Air Quality Monitoring Network (LML) operated by the RIVM provides hourly updates of current air quality maps for nitrogen dioxide, ozone and particulate matter in the Netherlands. Measurements at representative LML locations are used to calculate estimates of the concentrations of these air pollutants at locations in the Netherlands falling outside the range of these monitoring stations. However, the current method for deriving these estimated concentrations, called INTERPOL, has a number of limitations, including the tendency to underestimate nitrogen dioxide concentrations in urban areas.

An improved interpolation method developed in Belgium (RIO: residual interpolation optimised for ozone) is used in that country to inform the public about the current air status using air quality maps based on the spatial interpolation of air quality measurements. In 2009, under the commission of the RIVM, the RIO interpolation method was extended and adapted for use in the Netherlands.
