Contra-expertise on the determination of radioactivity of waste water and ventilation air of COVRA N.V. : Period 2013Publiekssamenvatting
Within the framework of a monitoring programme, RIVM measures the release of radioactivity into water and ventilation air of COVRA N.V. Measurements are carried out up to eight times per year. This form of counter-expertise is aimed at verifying and supporting the reliability of the analyses carried out by COVRA. The two different sets of waste water analyses are generally in agreement, as is also the case in 2013 for gamma-emitters and tritium. For gross alpha, gross beta and 14C the agreement is reasonable. Considering the fact that RIVM and COVRA apply different measuring principles the agreement in the gross beta results in waste water is good. For one of the 14C determinations the agreement was bad without a clear explanation.
The results for gross alpha and gross beta, 3H and 14C obtained by RIVM and COVRA in ventilation air samples of the waste treatment building are generally in good agreement The agreement was good in the analytical results found by RIVM and COVRA in ventilation air from the high activity waste storage building.
RIVM analyzed five waste water samples and eight samples of ventilation air from both the waste treatment building and the high activity waste storage building. These samples were taken by COVRA at various time points dispersed throughout 2013. The analyses were carried out on behalf of the Department of Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguards of the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate, Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment.
