Technical description of Standard Calculation Method 1 (SRM-1) In 2007 the Dutch government decided to calculate the impact of spatial planning on air quality by means of three standard calculation methods known as SRM-1, SRM-2 and SRM-3. A clear definition of the calculation rules of the standard methods was essential to ensure their correct use. The Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment asked the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) to set down in a report the technical rules for calculating the effects along urban streets (SRM-1). From now on the Ministry will refer to this report when dealing with SRM-1.
In addition to legal information, the Dutch 'Regulations for Air Quality Assessment 2007' (Regeling beoordeling luchtkwaliteit 2007, Rbl 2007) provide practical information about the calculation method. This consists of details of the locations where and the way in which air quality must be determined by means of measurements and calculations. The formulas and calculation steps are described for making calculations with the standard calculation methods for air quality.
RIVM added the very latest developments concerning all relevant items to the calculation rules in Rbl 2007. This consisted predominantly of the practical choices made over the past years to allow use of the standard calculation methods. A separate report describes the calculation rules applicable in non-urban situations (SRM-2).
