The Nuclear Research Group at Petten (NRG) measures the release of radioactivity into the waste water and atmosphere. The RIVM performs eight times per year a counter expertise on these measurements. This form of counter-expertise is aimed at verifying and supporting the reliability of the analyses carried out by NRG. The samples of waste water and ventilation air are taken by NRG at various time points dispersed throughout the year. The two different sets of measurements are generally in (very) good agreement for gammaspectrometry and gross-alpha, as is also the case in 2016. The agreement in the data for gross beta emitters in waste water is poor and can be improved further; RIVM always reports lower values than NRG. This is partly explained by the presence of short-lived beta-emitters in waste water of NRG, and partly because of differences in the analytical methods applied by NRG and RIVM. The results obtained by RIVM and NRG in ventilation air samples compare well. RIVM detected a very low gamma activity for 131I in five samples, for 133Xe in six samples, for 137Cs in eight samples, for 191Os in seven samples, and for 203Hg in one sample. All these values are well below the NRG detection limit. Gross alpha and gross beta results are all close to the detection limit. There is no significant difference between these results and the results obtained in outside air in Bilthoven. RIVM carried out this counter-expertise on behalf of the Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ANVS).
