    Title
    Zonkrachtactieplan : Versie 2019
    Translated Title
    UV-index action plan : Version 2019
    Publiekssamenvatting
Every year more than 50,000 new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the Netherlands. Exposure of the skin to solar UV-radiation is the primary cause of such cancers. UV-radiaton also contributes to the incidence of cataract of the eye. Sensible sun protection habits can reduce the risk of damage from UV radiation. The UV-index action plan was established to promote such habits. The plan aims to ensure that the parties involved agree on clear and consistent communications with regard to UV exposure. These agreements will contribute to people being more aware and sensible about UV radiation. In addition, the UV-index action plan can increase knowledge of UV radiation and exposure by drafting a joint knowledge agenda. This agenda will identify and prioritize the topics where extra research is needed, also in collaboration with other parties. The UV-index action plan was drawn up by the RIVM together with other partners involved in efforts to prevent skin cancer. The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport commissioned the plan due to its concern about the sharp increase of skin cancer incidence. This increase is only partly explained by the ageing of the Dutch population and the depletion of the ozone layer. The increase is most likely caused, in large part, by the fact that people expose their skin to UV radiation more frequently and for longer periods of time. Due to climate change, the number of warm days will increase, and as a result we will probably spend more time outdoors in the future and expose our skin and eyes even more to the sun.
