Every year RIVM publishes a report of RIVM's Strategic Programme (SPR). The report is intended to inform the owner of RIVM (the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS), the Scientific Advisory Board and other interested parties inside and outside the institute about the research it has carried out. The SPR is intended to provide RIVM with the expertise and quality to carry out the tasks of clients adequately now and in future. With this in mind three types of projects are being implemented: research, innovation and expertise development. The SPR started with 83 projects which were accommodated in six spearheads and four crosscutting themes. The projects are implemented in a four year cycle. This overview report explains a couple of sample projects. In 2016 the first products were delivered for all projects, such as acquiring data, performing analyses and writing manuscripts. We also participated in the relevant national and international symposia and conferences. A number of interesting examples of innovation are: the 'Fruitbuit', an app which makes it easier for users to order their daily intake of fruit, the 'Tekentrektrainer', a device made of artificial skin which healthcare workers can use to practice removing ticks and the '2GetThere' project which is aimed at marketing a method previously developed within SPR for measuring ammonia. In 2016 a great deal of attention was paid to international projects. RIVM's participation in these kinds of projects contributes to the quality of the research and ensures that the SPR projects link up with European (research) priorities. In 2016 twelve projects which were carried out at international level were partially financed from the SPR.
